The term butch was to describe men back in the 1940’s and women with masculine energy were called tomboys. Later, the term butch was used by heterosexual people to describe tomboyish women. “Butch” can be used to describe a person’s gender or gender performance. A masculine person of any gender can be described as butch. Wherever you are on the butch spectrum, you may have come across these butch lesbian problems a few times in your life:
1. When people think you are 100% butch, 100% of the time. Just because you’re butch doesn’t mean you know how to build a house, landscape the yard and drive a pick up truck.
2. When straight guys think you want to check out women with them all of the time. Yes these ladies are hot but I don’t want to check them out with you!
3. When people ask you if you’re trying to be a man. You just wish everyone gets you and you can go on living your life.
4. When a gay guy hits on you. This is kinda funny, but kinda not!
5. When you see something “girly” that you like and when you explain it to people, you see this weird look of confusion on their face.
6. Going shopping and looking for men’s clothes when you have breasts and hips. You just revert to shopping online and paying more for butch clothing lines. You know it’s worth it when you you walk in that club and look sharp as f&#@.
7. Using a public restroom. When you go in the women’s restroom there is a chance some old lady will think you are a guy and smack you with her purse.
8. Avoiding change rooms. You know again some old lady is going to give you a hard time.
9. When someone calls you “Sir” on the phone. Do you correct them?
10. When people think you are only attracted to femme women. You are like this magical unicorn that floats from femme to butch to femme, just to confuse people!
11. When you see someone trying to figure out if you are a man or a woman.
12. When everyone wants you to help them move because they think you are super strong.
13. Everyone thinks you are the man in the relationship.
14. When you feel the need to cry and people are like “But you’re butch. NO FEELINGS ALLOWED.”
