Mary Lambert was born on May 3, 1989 and is a lesbian singer. She wrote the chorus on Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ gay marriage anthem, “Same Love.” She used the same hook on her own single, pairing some of the original lyrics with new melodies. She is a singer-songwriter, spoken word artist, gay rights activist and poet and can play the piano, guitar, cello.
She was sexually abused as a child and her family was expelled from the church when she was six after her mother came out as lesbian. She came out as a lesbian at the age of 17. When Mary was only 6 years old she taught herself how to play piano and write songs, as a way to cope with her traumatic and abusive household. She later moved to Seattle where she went to college and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Music in Composition. She writes about her early childhood traumas, sexual abuse, body image, bipolar disorder, and her sexuality.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis performed with Madonna and Mary Lambert at the Grammys. They were joined by Queen Latifah, who officiated a mass wedding during their song.
Heart On My Sleeve was released on October 14, 2014 and debuted at number 29 on the Billboard 200.
Mary Lambert released her debut major label EP on Welcome to the Age of My Body under Capitol Records on December 17, 2013. The EP features a new version of She Keeps Me Warm, Body Love, Letters Don’t Talk and a new song called SarasvatiHer songwriting style has been compared to Adele, Tori Amos, Bon Iver and James Blake.
