Rain Dove: New York’s Androgynous Supermodel
This week, androgynous and genderqueer model, Rain Dove is our pick for Woman Crush Wednesday. Her modelling career has really taken off and people sure have noticed! Her frame, 6’2″ height and striking features help make Rain one-of-a-kind. It’s nearly impossible to resist her piercing gaze. It seems she was born for modelling but her path wasn’t always clear in terms of her career or even when it came to defining her own sexuality and place in the world.
Rain has been an accomplished wilderness firefighter and had absolutely no trouble keeping up with her male counterparts. Her fierce determination and strength shows in her modelling but the confidence she exudes wasn’t always present.
Rain comments, “…It wasn’t until I was a wilderness firefighter for a while and that’s when I felt more empowered in my ambiguity and sexuality as far as gender presentation goes.”
The world is becoming more and more aware of genderqueer issues and androgynous models are more common place but early in her modelling career Rain would commonly be mistaken for a male model.
Rain Dove has attributed her physique to growing up on a farm and staying active. Rain is her real name but growing up her parents called her “Danny” becuase they thought the other kids may make fun of her unique name. As time went on and she entered high school things started to change for her. “Having a different name didn’t really help much, they still teased me and called me ‘Tranny Danny.’ I was too young to know what tranny meant.”
The same features that were mocked by teenagers in her adolescence have made Rain even more sought-after in the world of modelling. She models both womanswear and menswear and typically feels more comfortable working with the latter.
You’ll be able to see much more of Rain on the Oxygen TV series, “Living Different”. The show follows a group of women living “alternative lifestyles” and you should check it out if you haven’t already.
