Today is #spiritday! Spirit Day began in October 2010 by Canadian teenager Brittany McMillan who wanted to remember young people who had lost their lives to suicide and wanted to take a stand against bullying. The name Spirit Day comes from the purple stripe of the Rainbow flag, whose creator Gilbert Baker defined it as “representing ‘spirit'”.

Are you wearing purple today? Wear purple to show your support for LGBT youth who are victims of bullying.

After a lesbian couple, two students, shared a brief kiss in a Sainsbury’s grocery store in Brighton, they were told told to leave if they continued to show affection after another customer found them “disgusting”. Britain is considered a most gay-friendly city. The security guard that gave the girls a hard time worked for a third party company. Sainsbury’s has apologized for the incident, which it says “should not have happened”.

The students joined a group of hundreds who swarmed the grocery store on Wednesday for a “big consensual kiss-in”. The supermarket was happy to allow protesters in to the New England Street store.
