Suze Orman
Susan Lynn Orman was born on June 5, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois. She is an american author, financial adviser, television personality and motivational speaker and is known for The Suze Orman Show. She worked for Merril Lynch as a financial adviser and became vice-president of investments at Prudential Bache Securities. Back in 1987 founded the Suze Orman Financial Group. The Suze Orman Show first started in 2002 on CNBC. She has written many books about personal fiance and had a radio show CNBC’s The Suze Orman Show.
One of the first Suze Orman books I bought was Women & Money and it has sold over 1 million copies since 2007. It teaches you how to create a healthy relationship with your money, make more out of the money you have for yourself and those you love and to gain the freedom to make your own choices. The book also taught me about who I am as woman and what I deserve to create a balanced life.
Suze Orman didn’t always have it easy, growing up as her family has financial challenges and she struggled to overcome a speech impediment. After high school she decided to travel the United States and landed in Berkeley, California where she decided to stay after landing a waitress job at the Buttercup Bakery where she worked for seven years. After Orman shared her dream of opening up her own restaurant with one of her longtime customers Fred Hasbrook in 1980, he gave her a cheque for $2,000. Fred Hasbrook talked to other customers and came up with $50,000 for her restaurant venture.
She wanted to keep her money safe and spoke to a representative at Merrill Lynch, met with a broker, and put her money into an account there. After the broker made some risky investments with her money, and it was gone after only three months. She wanted to learn more about investing and decided to become a broker herself. She later applied to the same Merrill Lynch office where she had lost her earlier investment. While training at Merril Lynch, she discovered that her broker had violated the company’s policies and eventually sued the company and settled with her out of court.
She later got some media exposure through a radio station after correcting a guest that provided incorrect information. The following Saturday she went down to the station and did a show. She later became a guest expert for other radio and television programs.
She started to write books on personal finance and investments and became a best selling author. Suze Orman and her partner Kathy Travis have been dating since 2001 and later married in 2010. They both spend time between their New York, Florida, and San Francisco homes.
