I recently came across the in-depth version of the Tegan and Sara story. This is one video I just had to talk about. For the video, they teamed up with “It Gets Better” an organization working with LGBT youth who are struggling with their identity and sexual orientation. For those of you who don’t know who Tegan and Sara are an indie band consisting of identical twins, Tegan and Sara Quin. They are also Canadian (so awesome, eh?) and they are also perfect advocates for the LGBT community because both of them are lesbians. The video I found highlights the struggles of coming out as lesbians and as having a twin going through the same thing. They tell it from the very beginning and lead you through their coming out stories.
Tegan and Sara are great because they like to find ways to lighten up the sometimes somber mood of right restrictions without taking it too far and brushing it away. In interviews they often talk about the importance of balancing this as well as being great allies.
Tegan and Sara have also worked with a large range of artists in their work the most notable being Cyndi Lauper, Tiesto and Death Cab for Cutie. They’ve also played stages at huge festivals such as Coachella and if you can find their interview with Andy Samberg you’ll be in for a good laugh.
You can also check out the It Gets Better website (http://www.itgetsbetter.org/) for more interviews and coming out stories with other notable advocates and allies in the community.
