Things All Allies Need to Know

20151130-GFM-Blog-Things All Allies Need to Know-400If you are gay it’s important to be present in your LGBT community in order to make fair and equal treatment a possibility for everyone. You will always also find allies- straight people campaigning for gay rights and it’s your job as a gay person to keep them informed on how to be a good ally and not steal the spotlight.

The first thing you’re going to want to do is clarify to your friend that you are gay but you are not their “gay friend” by breaking down stereotypes and barriers this makes it a more open.

You want to inform your friend that when spreading their support it is not necessary to say anything along the lines of “I’m straight and I support love/gay rights/whatever” just support don’t worry about people needing to make sure that you’re straight. It takes away from the cause.

Let your friend know that “A” does not stand for allies and there is no need to have an “S” for straight.

When being an ally it’s important that you step yourself away from the cause. We all like attention but don’t do it for that. Do it because you know that this is a change that needs to happen. Take part in art and work by those in the gay community but do not feel the need to make your own, challenge it or post it while maintaining and shoving it down people’s throats that you are straight.

As an ally you also do not want to dismiss feelings gays have of being left out. Yes equal rights are becoming more of a thing but there is still a lot of homophobia in the world so if somebody gay is having a hard time or talking about the struggle do not dismiss their feelings. Do not counter their feelings. Instead take a moment to just listen. Listening is always great support.

These are just a few tips for being a great ally to remind you to spread love and acceptance. If you want more information on the LGBT community stay up to date here at GirlfriendsMeet!
