You’ve heard countless people say it. That’s right I know you know the phrase, “new year, new me” and we’re all getting our resolutions together and most of us are borrowing resolutions that we made last year and the year before. So what are the top 10 most popular New Year resolutions that everybody fails at? What are some tips to keep you on track?
Top 10 New Year’s resolutions everybody fails at:
- Lose Weight/Get fit/Eat healthy
Are you sick of feeling like a shlump? Sick of spending all your money on fast food and takeout? A lot of people think exercising and eating healthy can get expensive. The key is to take it little by little. You don’t need to be the queen of lazy and take out but you also don’t need to be the next Instagram trainer. If the goal is to be healthy do so in a way of balance that you can stick to. An exercise you like and healthy food you like incorporated into your lifestyle.
- Quit Smoking
What? You don’t love waking up every morning to a hacking cough? This one is the hardest to give tips for because the ingredients in cigarettes are literally addicting your best bet would be to visit a doctor or program to help you quit. Or if you’re a person who likes challenges, find other people who are looking to quit, put in a pool of money and if a person lights a cigarette they’re not allowed to win the money. Last person standing gets all of the money but hopefully they quit for good.
- Save Money/ Get out of Debt
Open a savings account and start saving just a little bit. Even $20 makes a difference same goes for getting out of debt just chipping at it will help pay it off a bit and start building your credit up again. I would suggest doing this as soon as you get your cheque so you don’t feel like you’re missing out on money later on.
- Volunteer
The hardest part about volunteering is getting there. Try to make plans to volunteer with a few good friends so on the day of you can’t back out. Look in your local classifieds for volunteer opportunities. Also, try to make your volunteer work suit your personality. You are less likely to want to volunteer somewhere you don’t like.
- Go Back to School
School can be costly or if you haven’t finished high school yet it can be embarrassing being too old to apply. The best bet for finishing high school is taking a GED so you’re surrounded by people going through the same struggle as you. They are becoming more accepted. If looking to head back to college make sure you balance it with something you enjoy doing and has jobs available in that field. Research as much as you can.
- Quit Drinking/Drink Less
Drinking a lot can be hard on your wallet and your body. Try and pin point the reason that you’re drinking. If your friends are often co-ercing you into drinking you don’t have to leave them but try to find friends that you can hang around and do other activities with. Make a drinking schedule maybe you only want to do it on holidays or on weekends.
- Get more sleep
If you’re having major sleeping difficulty then contact a doctor to see if it’s caused by any health issues. If not make sure that you set a bedtime for yourself and for an hour before going to sleep try and cut off the food, coffee and electronics. Read or do something relaxing so your brain isn’t buzzing. Make sure you’ve went to the washroom and that you’re full but not stuffed.
- Travel/ Go on a trip
Start saving and looking for internet tips on good deals. Plan in advance as perhaps invite other people along that you know will be serious about going on a trip. Sometimes this cuts down on costs. Make sure to always plan for a bit more money whether it’s a road trip or trip across the globe sometimes things can get in the way and you want to be prepared.
- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
It’s been everywhere that global warming is heating up the planet and excessive consumerism is causing a downfall. Make a rule that when if you see something you want that you want it again in 10 days in order to buy it. Make sure you have a recycling program in your area and a bin in reach. Try to print less and join any environmental groups in your area.
- Catch up with family/old friends
Sometimes it is hard to catch up with people when you’re so wrapped up in your routine. Try inviting them along to something that you would usually do or invite them over for dinner. If that doesn’t work take the initiative by going out and doing something that they’d like. Weeks turn into months and so on. You know the deal.
If any of these are your resolutions then break the mold be the person that completes exactly what they said they were going to do. Good luck!
