Tracy Chapman – Women Crush

Tracy-Chapman-Sm

This week our woman crush Wednesday on Girlfriends Meet is singer and songwriter Tracy Chapman. She is heir to the lovely, deep, soothing and sexy voice and sings the very popular songs Fast Car and Give me one Reason.

Tracy Chapman was born in Cleveland, Ohio on March 30, 1964. When she was young she moved to Connecticut. Before being spotted she spent her time studying anthropology and African studies at Tufts University in Massachusetts.

How did she get discovered?

She started by writing her own songs and performing at smaller venues in Boston. Tracy then got the chance to work for a local radio station called WMFO. In 1986 her friend introduced her to one of the managers at Elektra Records and from there she was able to record her first album that was titled with her name Tracy Chapman.

Her stunning words and vocals rose to popularity and she became number one on the charts in both the United States of America and in the United Kingdom. From there she kept running with more albums and experimenting with different sounds each time getting positive replies from her audience and fans.

Her music alone and her very unique and confident persona is enough to make her our #wcw but what really makes it happens is her constant activism in communities and helping people. Being a women of color in the spotlight as well as an open lesbian is not easy and yet she still lends her time to moving forward equality and helping others.

Her music is filled with hints towards social activism and her views but on top of that she makes sure to be present at rallies, charity events and organizations.

She has spoken out on LGBT issues many times and works close with the San Francisco AIDs foundation helping to find cure and spread awareness about prevention. She also worked with the former Circle of Life organization that helped to educate and find ways to grow and heal the environment.

She spends much of her time working on making others comfortable and pushing the world towards a more safe and better place with equality for all and longevity for life. This makes Tracy Chapman our woman crush because we can’t think of a better, stronger woman to put in her place today.

She is a fire that’s not burning out and her lyrics relate to us and bring us to new heights. Not everybody can seamlessly mix modern with a laid back, new age, hippie view but she manages to do it in a way that promotes and stimulates change and makes everybody feel comfortable.

She turns 50 years old next month but she’s not stopping anytime soon and we wish her the best on reaching her goals and making her music.
